Finishes, Coatings & Considerations for Your Custom Cannabis Labels
Having worked with many cannabis companies, we understand the need to have eye-catching product labels that attract consumers, address regulatory requirements, and create a strong brand.
Special considerations for cannabis labels may include:
- Lamination
- Metallic Silver Labels
- Adhesive Options
- Thermal Transfer & Direct Thermal
- Hinge Labels (Extended Content)
- And more!
Lamination for Protection
Laminating protects the label from moisture and damage, so choosing the right lamination obviously makes a difference. Whether it’s thermal lamination, gloss lamination, or matte lamination, your products will benefit from this added resilience.
Adhesive Selection for Right Surface
Choosing the right adhesive is also important. Testing adhesives for application is crucial because all products are a little different. Plastic is not always the same across different containers, a pre-roll plastic tube may not be the same as the plastic on a vape pen. Feel free to ask us for samples to test before a production run.
Hinge Labels for Expanded Content
Hinge labels (extended content labels) can add space for a front design while still having the legal text underneath and are very popular for a lot of our cannabis clients. Clients can thermally imprint product information on the “top” and a simple “peel here” can be placed on the label to indicate there is more information on the base layer—the base layer is typically used to add government/state warnings.
Metallic Labels for Wow Effect
When used with opaque white, these labels can give a metallic look to parts of the label that are not backed with white. For example, if a purple is used on an area of the label that does not have white behind the copy/image, it will have a shiny metallic purple look to it.
Thermal Transfer and Direct Thermal Labels for Added Flexibility
Looking to print in house with a thermal printer? Thermal transfer and direct thermal labels are ideal when using thermal printers such as Zebra. Our labels can be left blank in certain areas to allow for space to add your specific information such as lot #, expiration date, flavor, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions about Custom-Printed Cannabis Labels
Gloss lamination is good for a high sheen, and matte lamination is good if the matte appearance is your goal (matte lamination is also very trendy). Matte lamination is also good if you want to mark on the label with a sharpie or pen.
Selecting the right adhesive is critical to ensuring your product label remains intact. Questions we may ask to determine which adhesive is best include: Is it going in a refrigerator or freezer? There are adhesives specially designed for freezer applications. Is the product hot filled or cold filled? Is it applied to a wet surface?
Once your artwork is received and we have a P.O. with your requirements, the typical turnaround time is 10 business days. There are exceptions to this so please ask us during the quoting process if you require a better lead time.
